Are you really green? Not if you don’t recycle your mobile phone
We all like to think of ourselves as green. We walk to work or ride our bicycles to the office when we can. We carpool. We recycle. We’ve given up bottled water. But you can’t truly call yourself green if you don’t recycle your old mobile phone.
You might not know it, but old mobile phones – along with other electronics – have steadily become one of the top pieces of trash found in area landfills. And these electronics, which include everything from mobile phones to computer monitors to printers and MP3 players, don’t just take up space in these landfills. They can leak potentially harmful toxins into the earth.
Many older model electronics, for instance, contain lead, cadmium and beryllium. It’s bad news when any of these chemicals seep into the soil.
To be truly green, then, you have several options: You can resist the urge to upgrade to a new mobile phone whenever a manufacturer introduces a new model. You can donate your old mobile phone to someone whom you know needs one but can’t afford a new phone. Or you can recycle your old mobile phone for cash.
That last option sounds intriguing, doesn’t it? It’s true, though, there are several private recycling companies now serving the UK that offer consumers sometimes generous amounts of cash for their unwanted mobile phones.
Finding these companies is easy. Just log onto your favorite search engine and type the phrase “UK mobile phone recycling”. You’ll find a host of private companies that are all more than happy to send you money for your old mobile phones.
The amounts that these companies will send you do vary significantly. Some mobile phone models will only fetch 11 pounds. Others will bring in dramatically more. Some sites, for instance, have been offering consumers more than 100 pounds for certain mobile phone models.
Working with the companies is every bit as easy as is finding them. Consumers only have to log onto one of the firms’ Web sites, find their make and model of phone and click to receive an instant offer. That offer might sound good to you or it might seem like a bit of a rip-off. Relax, though. You are under no obligation to accept the offer, whatever it may be.
If you do like it, though, simply click on the “accept” or similar button. You can then mail your used mobile phone directly to the recycler. You should receive your payment within seven business days.
You should feel good about the bit of extra spending money in your pockets. But you should even better about the good deed you’ll be doing for the environment. Remember, it’s one thing to talk about being green, it’s another entirely to do something that really makes you green. Talk is easy. Doing something isn’t. Recycling your mobile phone doesn’t take much effort, but it does take a bit more work than does only talking about helping the environment.
When you divert an old mobile phone from a landfill, you are definitely being green. This is why UK government officials and environmental activists are so eager to see more UK residents recycle their old mobile phones, whether they do it for cash or simply for the greater good.
Next time you want to upgrade your mobile phone – or any piece of electronic equipment, for that matter – make the environmentally friendly choice: Find the recycling company you like best. Then work out a deal with the company for your old mobile phone. You’ll enjoy the cash. And you should also enjoy the knowledge that, yes, you truly are green.
