Money Back on 18 Month Contracts
Why don’t more people sell their mobile phones for cash?
There’s a quick and easy way to put some extra cash in your pockets: You can sell your old mobile phone for money.
Unfortunately, an alarmingly small percentage of mobile phone owners in the UK actually take advantage of this service. Most consumers instead simply toss their old mobile phones in the trash.
This is bad news for the environment. Old mobile phones clutter already crowded landfills. And many older models may contain chemicals such as beryllium, lead or cadmium that can leak into the soil, causing future problems.
It’s also bad news for consumers. Recycling old mobile phones for cash won’t make anyone an instant millionaire. But it will provide them with a bit of extra spending money. Consumers can expect to make about 50 pounds for each working newer model mobile phone they send to a private recycling company.

So, if it makes so much sense, both environmentally and economically, to recycle mobile phones for cash, why do so few people actually do it?
The biggest problem may be that the vast majority of UK residents are still unaware that they can recycle their old mobile phones. This means that when a new model comes out, one that they can’t live without, these residents will either throw their now outdated and unwanted mobile phone in the trash or simply throw in a dresser drawer and forget about it.
Neither option is ideal. Recycling companies make good use of unwanted mobile phones. They’ll either refurbish them and provide them to charitable organizations or recycle their parts. Either way, these companies keep mobile phones from ending up in landfills and put them or their parts to good use. It’s an efficient and effective way to reduce the amount of waste we generate in this country.
Mobile phone recycling programs, though, can’t be truly effective if not enough people take advantage of them. And, unfortunately, that’s what is happening now.
According to a recent study by mobile phone maker Nokia, 75 percent of mobile phone users have no idea how to recycle their old phones. The same study also found that only 3 percent of mobile phones in the UK are ever recycled.
These are pretty depressing figures. They’re especially depressing considering that the Internet is filled with private companies willing to pay cash for old mobile phones. Consumers merely have to run a quick search for “UK mobile phone recycling” to turn up dozens of pages of online retailers eager to send along cash for unwanted mobile phones.
How can people change this situation? How can people encourage mobile phone recycling?
It’s pretty simple, actually; they have to tell their friends, family members and co-workers about it. They have to promote it through positive word-of-mouth.
This means that anyone who has had a positive experience sending their mobile phone to a recycler for quick cash should spread the word to their friends. They should share the news at family parties. And they should bring it up at work.
The more people who know about recycling mobile phones for money, the more successful these private companies will be at keeping old phones out of landfills.
The next time you open an envelope filled with quick cash from your old mobile phone, don’t just stash the money or spend it. Tell the folks you’re spending it on or with exactly where all those pounds came from. Make sure they know that they, too, can pick up some easy money by recycling their old mobile phones. This movement needs its evangelists – a lot of them -- and there’s no reason why every satisfied consumer can’t be one.
